The Environment
Environmental Crime and What Manchester City Council is doing about it
What IS an environmental crime?
- Flytipping
- Dog fouling
- Fly-posting
- Graffiti
- Littering (including from vehicles)
- Leaving abandoned or untaxed vehicles on the street
- Handing out flyers in certain areas without permission
These are all examples of environmental crime.
During the 100 days campaign, Manchester City Council's Street Management Service will be working with Greater Manchester Police, the Fire Service and other agencies, such as NCP. They'll do a sweep of each ward or "beat" to tackle whatever local environmental issues have been highlighted by residents, in a one-day "Beatsweep". Street Wardens, Street Environment Managers and Parking Attendants challenge individuals or businesses who have not taken their environmental responsibilities seriously. If these incidents are witnessed, fixed penalty notices can be served in the first instance as an alternative to prosecution, but in cases where the individual or business doesn't accept these fines, prosecution may follow.
