Project Profile: MERCi: Manchester Environmental Resource Centre Initiative08/08/2009 MERCi (pronounced 'murky') was set up in 1996 by a group of campaigners in Manchester who wanted to provide support, positive vision and available resources to make Manchester a more sustainable city. The history of grassroots campaigning in Manchester is a long and successful one. People taking action, separate from established membership groups, have achieved a great deal in the city and beyond. In the 1990's the groups working for a better Manchester were very active, but even amongst the 'activists' single issue campaigning still seemed to dominate the agenda and no one seemed to be talking about the links between poverty and energy or food and well-being. There was also little communication between these diverse groups and no real sharing of resources, support, ideas and skills. From these identified 'gaps' grew the idea for Bridge 5 Mill, Manchester's first Centre for Change, and the Environment Network for Manchester, a collective of groups and organisations working to improve the environment of Manchester. The rest as they say is history! Related Link(s) |
