Project Profile: Rooftop Gardens spreading across Manchester!

02/07/2009

Green roofs are taking off in Manchester, with the Crumpsall Sure Start Centre in Cromhurst Street becoming the latest building in the city to go green, with a green roof of vegetation being planted on its toy store in May.

The council funded the roof which has been built by Outerspace landscapers to attract insects and birds, reduce the risk of flooding by absorbing rainwater, filter pollution out of the air and help act against climate change.

Carers at the centre will be using the roof to teach children about nature, with the plants growing back stronger each spring.

Sir Richard Leese, leader of the council, said: "Green roofs are an important part of creating an attractive city for the residents and businesses of Manchester."
