Own Your Streets 2006
19/04/2006
As part of the Challenge Manchester: 100 Days 2006, Manchester City Council are conducting a 'call to arms' for volunteers to help keep the streets of Manchester clean on Monday 24 April.
By stopping street cleansing services within most parts of the city centre for the day, and only emptying the litter bins, the Council hopes that it will make the people who live, work and visit Manchester think about the amount of litter discarded without care, and join forces to own their streets and help keep them clean. The key aim of the day is to educate and promote a responsible attitude to Manchester's environment.
We'd like as many volunteers as possible to create awareness of the day and have an impactful presence either throughout the day or at one of the following 'shifts':
Morning - Briefing at 7.45 Piccadilly Gardens for 8.00 - 10.00 Lunch - Briefing at 11.15 Piccadilly Gardens for 11.30 - 2.30 Afternoon - Briefing at 2.45 Piccadilly Gardens for 3.00 - 4.00
Visitors, shoppers and workers will be targeted at peak 'footfall' times coming in and out of the city, and milling around food establishments at lunchtime. Main routes for volunteers include: Piccadilly, Market Street, Cross Street, Corporation Street, Deansgate, St Peter's Square. However, teams of volunteers will also be hitting other areas of the city.
On the day we will be using Piccadilly Gardens as a meeting and briefing point and it is here that you can collect your special campaign T-Shirt, hat and pledge sheet and team up with fellow volunteers. Volunteers will ask people to rate the street on it's cleanliness out of ten and then ask a couple of questions regarding the Mancunian Agreement. We will ensure that all volunteers receive a briefing.
If you would like to volunteer or you know of any willing and enthusiastic volunteers, or would like further information regarding the event, please do not hesitate to contact me via email or telephone as below.
Last year’s special day was phenomenally successful and it was totally down to the enthusiasm of our volunteers. This year we want to make the event bigger and better with fewer people dropping litter.
