Do you know of a Biodiversity Hotspot?

25/02/2007

Do you know of a small wildlife or nature project in Manchester that deserves a pat on the back?

We know there are many groups, schools, businesses and local residents who make a difference to the biodiversity in their neighbourhood, carrying out practical conservation work that improves the environment. In the shadow of some of the city's better-known Sites of Biological Importance and Local Nature Reserves, these projects can often go largely unnoticed… But not any more!

The new Biodiversity Hotspot Awards aim to sing the praises of these projects across the city, because they're so important to the range and breadth of Manchester's Biodiversity. If you know of a project in your area that you'd like to nominate, let us know about it! Nominated projects will be visited and rated for naturalness, diversity, community involvement and sustainability.

The resulting Hotspots will be featured on the wildaboutmanchester website, and prizes will also be awarded to those groups that help further their achievements by looking after Manchester's wildlife - these will include wildflower seeds, nesting boxes, trees or aquatic plants: whichever is most suited to the individual "hotspot."

If you'd like to recommend a project or site which you think is suitable for a Biodiversity Hotspot Award, please contact Suzanne Kornecki on 0161 953 2751,
