Wythenshawe’s super Summersonic scheme*
12/07/2010
There’s an action-packed, super-charged programme of events to keep youngsters enthralled over the school summer holidays in Wythenshawe.
The ‘Summersonic’ holiday programme, backed by Manchester City Council, offers a wide range of free sports and leisure activities for 8-16 year olds, across each of the Wythenshawe wards.
Activities will include coaching in skateboarding, wrestling, football, netball and even circus skills. There will also be lessons in hairdressing, street dance, computer skills, art and healthy eating. Team-building events including orienteering exercises will be held regularly through the month to encourage youngsters to get to know each other and develop their friendships. There will also be chance to take part in a trip to local radio station Wythenshawe FM, where children will be able to ‘takeover’ the studios to produce their own broadcast.
Summersonic starts on Monday 19 July for two hours a day, three days a week (1-3pm, Monday, Wednesday and Friday), until Friday 30 July. After that it will run from Monday 2 August for four hours, five days a week (12- 4pm, Monday to Friday), until Friday 27 August. A shuttle service will be included throughout so that youngsters can select activities in seven different centres including the Forum and Wythenshawe Park.
Councillor Sheila Newman, Executive Member for Children’s Services at Manchester City Council, said: “There’s such a variety of activities, there will be something to appeal to everyone. And, perhaps even more importantly, there is a huge social dimension to the project, where all the youngsters get to know each other by taking the shuttle buses to and from venues that they may not have been to before.
“I’m sure that by the end of the summer the children will have had great fun, developed new skills and made long-lasting friendships.”
The holiday scheme originally started in 2008 and has grown each year. Last year 400 children had a place on Summersonic. The programme is funded by Manchester City Council, The Forum Trust, St Modwen, Parkway Green Housing Trust and Willow Park Housing Trust.
Summersonic has been organised in conjunction with the ward co-ordinators in each of the five Wythenshawe wards. Other partners include Wythenshawe Regeneration, Leisure Services (Active Lifestyles), Manchester Youth Offer, ASDA, Serco, Willow Park Housing Trust, Wythenshawe FM, GM Fire and Rescue Service, City in the Community and the Manchester United Foundation.
