Rubbish Roadshow
19/07/2010
Stanley Grove Primary School in Longsight took part in a pilot project recently focusing on the impacts of littering, disposing of food waste (particularly relating to feeding pigeons in public areas) and the benefits of recycling.
The Rubbish Roadshow is an interactive and educational day aimed at challenging children’s perceptions of waste, recycling and littering, with the aim of changing the behaviour of not just the children involved but their extended families as well.
The roadshow included:
Love Food Hate Waste Campaign– with advice on how to avoid food waste –
information about portion control and recipes using leftover ingredients.
Waste and Recycling Team– had information about recycling household rubbish, including the new food waste collection where leftover food is turned into compost so is not wasted.
Street Environment Manager – giving advice and information about the impact of litter, with information about fines and legislation.
Pest Control – taught how rubbish on the streets encourages pests such as rats, mice, flies and pigeons. These can cause problems when they live alongside people.
Environmental Campaigns Team – Children were asked – “What makes you proud of Longsight?” Certainly not the litter and rubbish! They were also asked to think about how it makes them feel, who’s responsible and what’s the solution to the problem?
Once the pilot has been evaluated it is hoped that the Rubbish Roadshow will be rolled out to the other primary schools in Longsight. There was also some great feedback from the children who took part:
“It was good because we learnt about it in a fun way”
“I told my family… they started to do recycling”
“I liked all of them – mostly the one with the cockroaches”
